Green Home Grants (2020-2021): What was it?

The Green Home Grant Scheme was established on the 28th of August 2020 and was discontinued on the 31st of March 2021 (however, if you had claimed a voucher and an application was ongoing, you could still be entitled to it). The scheme allowed those eligible to apply for a £5,000 voucher that would cover up to two-thirds the cost for supplying and installing insulation, double glazing and heating.

The voucher was available to everyone who owned, had shared ownership, where private landlords/tenants, social landlords and park homes or property in England. Those who were living in Scotland or Wales didn’t qualify for the Green Homes scheme, however, they may have still qualified for a different ECO grant.

If you received certain benefits, allowances or tax credits, you could claim up to £10,000. This amount could be used to cover the cost of many different types of energy-saving solutions which would improve a property’s EPC rating. The £10,000 voucher wasn’t available to landlords. 

A ‘primary’ measure had to be approved before a ‘secondary’ measure could be installed. Primary measures included insulation and low-carbon heating (heat pumps, solar, biomass heater) whilst secondary measures included double glazing for windows, draught-proofing and heating controls.

In order to claim the full amount of the voucher, the value of the primary measure would have to equal £2,500. Secondary measures could only be up to the value of the primary measures thus meaning that £2,500 was the max amount.

Work had to be completed by someone who was registered installed by TrustMark and had to have met PAS and MCS standards. The voucher could only be used by the person who received it. The expiry date for vouchers issued up to the 31st of August 2021 was valid for 3 months while vouchers issued after that date were valid up to the 30th of November 2021.

Energy Grants UK proudly looked at over 4,500 Green Home Voucher applications to aid those who were in fuel poverty or had poor insulation with many of them going through to completion. Now, Energy Grants UK continues to aid those by providing grant energy solutions through the ongoing ECO3 scheme.
